An earlier LIFE project showed how biodiversity can be improved in olive groves while also halting soil loss and reducing pesticide use, thereby lowering production costs. SEO/BirdLife aims to expand the use of its model through a brand-new project, LIFE Olivares Vivos +. The team aims to receive at least 500 applications from farmers interested in applying the model and becoming ‘Olivares Vivos' certified. At least 10 000 hectares of olive groves harvested to produce olive oil - an area about 15 times the size of Gibraltar - are expected to receive certification, showing they help conserve biodiversity. Several farms will also be certified for table olive production. Thanks to the project, flora and fauna are expected to increase by 10% in just three years in newly certified farms, and pesticide use should fall by at least half.","2021-01-09T00:00:00","2026-09-30T00:00:00","Universidad de Jaén","University of Jaén",999849423,"ESQ7350006H","Spain","2037-03-08T00:00:00","https://www.ujaen.es/","Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE)","Nature and biodiversity","LIFE 2020","Partner","7.031.291,00","4.166.970,00","",9],

This domain includes natural language processing (NLP), which is currently booming, to the benefit of many end users. However, this optimization-based technological progress poses an important challenge: accounting for and fostering language diversity. The UniDive Action takes two original stands on this challenge. Firstly, it aims at embracing both inter- and intra-language diversity, i.e. a diversity understood both in terms of the differences among the existing languages and of the variety of linguistic phenomena exhibited within a language. Secondly, UniDive does not assume that linguistic diversity is to be protected against technological progress but strives for both of these aims jointly, to their mutual benefit. Its approach is to: (i) pursue NLP-applicable universality of terminologies and methodologies, (ii) quantify inter- and intra-linguistic diversity, (iii) boost and coordinate universality- and diversity-driven development of language resources and tools. UniDive builds upon previous experience of European networks and projects which provided a proof of concept for language modelling and processing, unified across many languages but preserving their diversity. The main benefits of the Action will include, on the theoretical side, a better understanding of language universals, and on the practical side, language resources and tools covering, in a unified framework, a bigger variety of language phenomena in a large number of languages, including low-resourced and endangered ones.","2022-09-23T00:00:00","2026-09-22T00:00:00","Universidad de Jaén","University of Jaén",999849423,"ESQ7350006H","Spain","2037-03-08T00:00:00","https://www.ujaen.es/","COST Action","","","Partner","","","",null],

CUPID will establish a research agenda and knowledge base to improve this in the European Union and beyond. Among the European intellectual disabilities population, many cancer diagnoses are symptomatic presentations following on from behavioural distress or physical changes. Cancer deaths among this population occur up to 20 years earlier than the general population. Factors influencing unequal health status and premature death amongst people with intellectual disabilities warrant further investigation. Article 25 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities acknowledges their right to healthcare. The Council of Europe Disability Strategy 2017-2023 recognises health systems failure to engage with and include people with disabilities. Many external and internal factors influence healthcare engagement among this population resulting in long- term health consequences. External factors include diagnostic overshadowing, paternalism and cancer screening delays during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the person challenges with communication, cognitive ability and decision-making capacity influence healthcare engagement. It is timely to develop collaborative links with the EU research and service provider communities to reach consensus on addressing these challenges. CUPID establishs active working partnerships with academics, researchers, non-governmental organisations, carers, people with intellectual disabilities and policy makers. CUPID will establish a research agenda and exchange information regarding cancer prevention in the intellectual disability population. During early childhood, neurodevelopmental conditions emerge and vulnerabilities for longer-term problems are sown. Homes, schools and neighbourhoods shape children’s life chances, interacting with individual differences in cognition and behaviour to determine access to resources and quality of life. However, because almost all current research measures behaviour and brain function by taking children away from these natural environments into controlled lab settings, our knowledge of how early life settings shape development is surprisingly limited. We understand very little about the mechanisms through which specific environmental features impact development (e.g. the effects of variation in noise, clutter, social interaction etc); how these vary across European nations; and how they interact with neurodiverse learning styles. This limits us from designing personalised practical interventions to tailor early environments for different individuals. Under this COST Action we shall create the infrastructure and networks to allow for transformative new approaches to quantifying variability in the early life physical and social environments experienced by children across the EU. We will bring together currently siloed areas of expertise across Europe in new methods for studying children in their natural habitats; new perspectives on cultural and neurodiversity; and new ethical and legal frameworks to support large-scale collaborative developmental science. Our network will be a partnership across European nations and with neurodiverse communities to enable our work to be underpinned by co-creation, ensuring we are harnessing state-of-the-art research efforts to generate meaningful and impactful real- world outcomes.","2023-09-22T00:00:00","2027-09-21T00:00:00","Universidad de Jaén","University of Jaén",999849423,"ESQ7350006H","Spain","2037-03-08T00:00:00","https://www.ujaen.es/","COST Action","","","Partner","","","",null],

Faced with the current climate, geopolitical and humanitarian crisis, many international and regional entities (political, industrial and scientific alike) recognize the importance of a strong materials innovation ecosystem for driving the clean energy transition. In response, self-driving laboratories (SDL) (a.k.a. MAPs – materials acceleration platforms) are created at institutional, regional and international levels. SDLs integrate combinatorial synthesis, high-throughput characterization, automated analysis and machine learning for fast-track discovery and optimization of advanced materials. While these platforms are proving their effectiveness in producing advanced materials with targeted functionalities and physical properties, a large margin of improvement still exists. Streamlining materials integration into components and to safe and sustainable products is one example challenge in order to enable rupture technology. Another challenge is that of geographical concentration of MAPs that practically excludes a substantial fraction of research labs and tech-companies in Europe from contributing and benefiting from such platforms. Finally, next generation material science researchers need to develop new skills to be able to integrate such systemic and automated approach into their future R&D framework. To this end, EU-MACE will become an ecosystem for accelerated materials development at the user end, gathering researchers and stakeholders with state-of-the-art digital and material competences combined with the market/social pull. The EU is currently struggling with soil degradation which is undoubtedly linked to agriculture intensification. Thus, a new soil management paradigm on soil monitoring, restoration and protection must be an endeavour of farmers, scientists, businesses, politicians and citizens. LivingSoiLL intends to respond to these challenges by establishing 5 Living Labs (LLs) in PT, FR, ES, IT and PL focused on permanent crops (vineyards, olive groves, chestnuts, hazelnuts and apple orchards), comprising at least 50 demonstration sites and 10 lighthouses, and with active participation of more than 2000 local actors. These LLs will focus on improving healthy soils and ecosystem services through co-creating, co-implementing and co-testing (digital) solutions to reduce erosion, improve soil structure, reduce the impacts of the intensive use of fertilizers and pesticides, increase water storage, enhance soil biodiversity, and the overall resilience of soil. By promoting locally adjusted innovative solutions, spreading sustainable soil management practices and enhancing soil literacy, LivingSoilLL will contribute to the overall improvement of soil health and environmental resilience. This approach, applied in real-life settings, will mobilize farmers, farm advisors and local communities, facilitating the assemblage of formal, scientific knowledge with experience-based farmer´s know-how, fostering a forum for the exchange of experiences and best practices. LivingSoilLL is also designed to produce policy recommendations on best soil management practices on permanent crops to reduce erosion while promoting other soil health indicators. To achieve this, agri-food decision-making has to be informed by the best available evidence.\n\nThe proposed action seeks to establish an international, European-based hub and network dedicated to supporting and promoting the use of evidence syntheses (ES) in agri-food systems. ES methods systematically collate and evaluate existing evidence to inform new studies and decision-making, ensuring validity, efficiency, and accessibility. By embracing the ES approach, stakeholders can enhance the quality of decision-making processes -underpinned by robust and unbiased evidence – while saving valuable time in achieving sustainability. ES is increasingly used to support agri-food decision making, but the community is disparate and unconnected, impacting on the efficiency of methods and uptake. \n\nThe objectives of NESA are to raise awareness among decision-makers and academia about the value of ES; to enhance the European capacity for delivery of robust evidence syntheses; and to facilitate their use for informed decision-making. This initiative will enable all parties to make informed decisions and contribute to the broader context of the agri-food sector’s development. The proposal emphasizes the involvement of various stakeholders in prioritizing and utilising ES to guide the transition towards sustainable development in the agri-food sector.\nEU-NESA recognizes the rapid development and impact potential of ES in addressing the challenges faced by the agri-food sector. Young people have been identified as particularly vulnerable and requiring urgent support. The European Commission recently stated: “Europe is witnessing a worsening of the mental health of the younger generations”. YouthDMH is specifically designed to help in addressing this challenge. It will focus on the role that digital technologies can play in supporting the mental health needs of young people. Overall, it will consider the ways in which technology can support mental health from the point at which young people first become aware of the difficulties, through to the delivery of large-scale evidence-based interventions. It will do so in a way that ensures young people and marginalised communities have a voice in envisaging the future. The core aim is to maximise the positive application of technology, whilst also mitigating the potential negative impact. The YouthDMH COST Action will establish a sustainable pan-European network, that is inclusive, interdisciplinary and intersectoral. It will support knowledge transfer, creation and dissemination and lay the foundations for coordinated research on the use of technology to support mental health in young people. Transdisciplinary Assessment of Legal and Regulatory Frameworks","","https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA24125","CRICULT is an initiative aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage during times of crisis. Cultural heritage often bears the brunt of various crises, be they human-made or caused by natural disasters. CRICULT seeks to create transdisciplinary research networks to enhance our understanding of how crises impact the cultural heritage sector and, most importantly, to develop sound policy proposals for its protection.\nIn the past, research and teaching on cultural heritage security during crises have been fragmented and sparse. CRICULT aims to change this by uniting experts from diverse backgrounds, each offering unique perspectives on the subject. The way we perceive, and address crises is significantly influenced by disciplinary and cultural viewpoints. The examination of a wide range of crises affecting cultural heritage will be conducted through six dedicated Working Groups. These crises encompass trafficking of artifacts, climate change and natural disasters, threats to intangible heritage, crises arising from warfare, historical injustices, forced migration, and issues related to overtourism and heritage neglect.\nCRICULT’s core objective is to create comprehensive crisis and solution matrices. They will encompass a wide range of potential factors that can lead to crises and the methods to identify them. Subsequently, we’ll identify potential solutions for crisis situations and compile them into a solutions matrix to be used for research and policy formulation.\nThe success of CRICULT hinges on the collective efforts of an international, interdisciplinary team comprising both young and experienced researchers. However, climate impacts can also spread from their origin across borders into other countries through trade and supply chains, financial flows or migration. To understand these cascading climate impacts on Europe and to develop coherent response policies, the chains through which impacts are transmitted need to be considered, e.g., changing crop yields affecting exports and prices which in turn affect security and migration in importing countries. Research on such cascading climate impacts is fragmented since the individual research communities related to impact transmission chains such as trade or migration have historically been separated and only recently started including biophysical climate impact data and models. Therefore, CROSS-CASCADE aims to develop common protocols, harmonised datasets and a joint understanding of how to conduct cross-sectoral, multi-model climate impact studies at regional and global scales that cover both initial biophysical impacts and impact transmission chains to foster projections of cascading climate impacts affecting Europe and to develop coherent policies for adapting to them. The Action will focus on key interactions of climate impacts, especially extreme events such as droughts or floods, across sectors and their propagation through trade, finance, migration and other impact transmission chains. CROSS-CASCADE will use COST networking instruments to train young researchers to conduct cross-sectoral cascading climate impact simulations, use novel methods for analysing them and to disseminate the data, code and results to scientists and stakeholders.","2025-03-10T00:00:00","2029-02-10T00:00:00","Universidad de Jaén","University of Jaén",999849423,"ESQ7350006H","Spain","2037-03-08T00:00:00","https://www.ujaen.es/","COST Action","","","Partner","","","",null],

Harvesting atmospheric carbon, so as to close the carbon-cycle, is of the utmost importance. Given the abundance of biologically sequestered carbon as a byproduct of our society, e.g. agricultural and forestry residues, pathways to their use in future materials production are sought. \n\nThe advancement of biomass deconstruction techniques has resulted in the production of more uniform and well characterised biomass-derived chemical and material streams, which are being used to develop sustainable bio-based products. However, to this day biorefinery processes which are able to operate on a feedstock-agnostic basis are not the norm, and the difficulty of predicting how the isolated fractions and building blocks will affect material properties make the whole value chain extremely expensive, causing a bottleneck in the development of novel products from laboratory to industrial scale. \n\nOur ReInvent COST Action will convene European and international competence, aligning scattered research efforts from across the globe to leverage various expertise for trans- and multidisciplinary science and realise our vision of resource inclusive renewable materials. We will bring together experts in chemistry, engineering, agriculture and forestry, biomass deconstruction, chemical analytics, separation, and materials science to focus on feedstocks-agnostic processes and the early-stage prediction of material properties, as well as techno-economic and environmental feasibility of the whole value chain. [72,"CA24121","KGELL","Ongoing","Knowledge Graphs in the Era of Large Language Models"," https://kgell-cost.eu/","https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA24121","Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have gained attention due to their ability to represent structured and interlinked information. KGs represent knowledge in the form of relations between entities, referred to as facts, typically grounded in formal ontological models. Such machine-readable formats enable AI systems to make decisions using clear and verifiable data. Consequently, KGs have become essential elements in web search engines, recommendation systems, etc. Large Language Models (LLMs) have revolutionized the landscape of AI and are widely utilized in various NLP tasks such as natural language understanding, question answering, etc. Despite their remarkable performance, LLMs suffer from some significant drawbacks. First, they are trained on general-purpose data and have lower performance in domain-specific tasks and low- resource languages. Secondly, they often reflect societal biases present in training data, which can result in biased outcomes. Third, LLMs sometimes produce inaccurate or made-up information, termed “hallucinations”. Finally, understanding the decision-making process of LLMs is challenging and their outputs may lack consistency. A potential solution to all these problems is to integrate LLMs with KGs, since KGs can provide factual information and the ability to perform reasoning. This would boost the LLM’s domain-specific reasoning, and interpretability, and mitigate biases and hallucinations. A notable challenge with KGs is their requirement for frequent updates, usually performed by processing and integrating information from vast textual datasets, LLMs can aid in generating and refining KGs. Therefore, combining LLMs and KGs offers a promising opportunity to advance both technologies and represents a pivotal challenge in the contemporary research landscape.","2025-10-23T00:00:00","2029-10-22T00:00:00","Universidad de Jaén","University of Jaén",999849423,"ESQ7350006H","Spain","2037-03-08T00:00:00","https://www.ujaen.es/","COST Action","","","Partner","","","",null],

EOSC Mesh addresses these challenges by expanding EOSC capacity and capabilities by establishing and enrolling seven federating Nodes interoperable with the EOSC EU Node: Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources (BBMRI), ENVRI (Environmental RIs), SSHOC (Social Sciences and Humanities), Scholarly Communications (OpenAIRE and OPERAS), High Energy Physics (CERN), and e-Infrastructures (EGI Federation and EUDAT CDI).\nThe federating Nodes will provide 25 Federating Capabilities offering Core, Generic and Thematic functionalities, and additional resources to EOSC including 2600+ tools and services, 1700+ datasets and the world’s largest biobank data repository, 80 workflows, and 5000+ other research artefacts. \nThe Nodes will support a service adoption programme to stimulate the growth of EOSC Federation Capabilities through open calls and the onboarding of services and research products from eight European countries and two international Research Infrastructures: CESNET (CZ), CSIC (ES), CYFRONET (PL), DataTerra (FR), EODC (AT), NFDI (DE), JISC (UK), LIP (PT); and GlobalCoast (Environmental Sciences) and METROFOOD-RI (Life Sciences).\nWe estimate to engage 650,000+ individual users and over 2000 research centres and health centers and industry partners spanning 40+ countries. The project supports this with 7 cross-node, international use cases from Environmental Science, Health, Social Science and Humanities, and Multidisciplinary Science. Users will be involved in co-design through requirement elicitation, piloting, integration and validation.
